Thanks so much for contacting me. I read every email that I receive.

One of the most humbling and unexpected consequences of writing about the impact of mental illness on a family is how many people reach out to me to share their own stories. It's also gratifying. When Giulia was first hospitalized in 2009, I felt so alone. I searched online for books, articles, or forums where people were talking about the caregiving side of mental illness, but didn't find much. One of the main reasons I write about the family experience of mental illness is to encourage people to share their experiences so that, if nothing else, we don't feel like we are alone in our journeys.

It seems like it's working. 90% of the emails I receive are from people who want to share their own story. I welcome such stories, but they are often difficult for me to respond to. I'm not a psychiatrist, and I don't feel comfortable telling people what choices to make, since I think the best choice is the one that feels right to you.

Regardless, I am still grateful for the stories people share with me.

We're All In This Together.
